In roulette, a ball rolls on a turntable. When the plate comes to a stop, the ball lands on one of 37 numbers. These numbers are 0 and the numbers from 1 to 36. This version of roulette is the most popular and is known as European Roulette. The less popular American version has 38 numbers, which are 0, 00 and the numbers from 1 to 36. The roulette table extends to the sides of the plate. This is the area where players place their bets. The numbers are distributed in a matrix with 12 rows and 3 columns. The number 0 is put outside the matrix and the other numbers inside it. Half of the numbers from 1 to 36 are red and the other half are black. The 0 is neither red nor black.
The first player places their bets by moving the chips to the designated betting areas. Different types of bets have different designated areas in the design. Bets on a single number or on groups of up to six numbers are known as inside bets, because the chips for these bets are placed within the matrix. The five inside bets have different names. The direct bet is the one that is made on a single number. The payout is 35 to 1. The player can bet on any of the 37 numbers, 0 included. The split bet is one that is placed on two adjacent numbers. These numbers can be horizontally or vertically adjacent. The payout for this bet is 17 to 1. The street bet is the one that is made on four numbers that form a square. The payout is 8 to 1. A six-line bet is made on two adjacent horizontal rows. The payout is 5 to 1.
Group bets of twelve to eighteen numbers are outside bets, because the chips are placed outside the matrix. Bets on three vertical columns of 12 numbers each are known as 1st dozen, 2nd dozen and 3rd dozen bets. These bets pay 2 to 1. In Roulette, there are three ways that players can bet on groups of 18 numbers. The most common is to bet on red or black numbers, which are known as red and black bets and pay 1 to 1. Another way is to bet on even or odd numbers, they are known by those names and pay 1 to 1. The last way is to bet on the group of numbers from 1 to 18 or on the group of numbers between 19 and 36. These bets also pay 1 to 1. After the plate comes to a stop, the dealer names the number. Losing bets are collected first and then winning bets are paid.
